3. Badcock Home Furniture &more
Website: https://www.badcock.com/
Founded in 1904 by Henry Stanhope Badcock, W.S. Badcock Corporation is a family business. Henry, a British immigrant, opened the first Badcock shop in Mulberry, Florida.
Henry ran this one business in Mulberry, FL for 16 years until selling it to his son Wogan in 1920. Before the 1929 land bubble and subsequent crash, business was booming. Badcock was not spared the effects of the Great Depression that swept the nation. Due to a lack of interest from potential buyers, Wogan started putting his inventory up for consignment at local shops in exchange for a cut of the revenues. Wogan also conceptualized the route salesman, a salesperson whose job was to drive a small truck over predetermined routes to promote Badcock products. This paved the way for Badcock's dealer model, which remains the company's cornerstone today. In addition, Wogan pioneered the concept of selling furniture on credit and collecting payments in installments.
This route-based and consignment-based sales strategy eventually grew into the present-day dealer business. The W.S. Badcock Corporation provided these home furniture stores financing in exchange for the dealers' exclusive agreement to stock and sell Badcock products. Wogan Badcock pioneered the now-standard practice of providing customers with simple, fair credit when purchasing goods.
